Garden Planning Essentials

Embarking on a gardening journey requires thoughtful preparation and an understanding of your available space. At Scarlett's Garden, we believe in the power of planning to create a lush, thriving garden. Follow these essential tips for planning your garden and yard to ensure a blooming success.

Assessing Your Space

Understanding the dimensions and conditions of your available space is crucial. Measure the area dedicated to your garden, taking note of sunlight exposure, soil type, and any existing vegetation. This will guide you in making informed decisions about what to plant and where.

Choosing the Right Plants

Selecting plants that flourish in your climate zone is critical. Consider your hardiness zone and seek evergreen plants that are well-adapted to your area's weather patterns and soil conditions. This approach guarantees a beautiful garden and promotes biodiversity and sustainability.

Boxwoods: SG recommends the NewGen Freedom Boxwood. This tight, uniform (yet vigorous) boxwood has a fast growth rate, deer resistant and hardy (not prone to disease or pest issues). This boxwood offers beautiful glossy green leaves and will make your garden look more formal, especially when planting more than one.

Size? At maturity, 3.5 feet (both tall and wide) for a rounded shape.

Growth Rate? 3'' - 5'' per year.

Sun or Shade? Both. Partial sun and shade. Avoid full sun.

Care? Always prune annually. Best to prune in the early spring.

Other boxwoods? Try 'Wintergreen' or 'Winter Gem' boxwoods

Setting Up Garden Beds

Designing your garden beds with the proper structure and soil is foundational to plant health. Here are some points to consider:

  • Determine the best layout for sunlight exposure and accessibility.
  • Choose high-quality soil enriched with organic matter to nourish your plants.
  • Regular watering is essential, but the amount will depend on plant species and weather conditions.

Watering Wisdom

Adequate hydration is vital for a garden's success. Implement a watering schedule that suits the needs of your specific plants, taking into account rainfall and the dryness of the soil. Consider installing a drip irrigation system for efficient water use.

The Art of Mulching

Mulching is a gardener's best friend. It helps retain soil moisture, suppresses weeds, and adds nutrients to the soil as it decomposes. Choose an organic mulch compatible with your garden's aesthetic and functional needs.

How much to mulch? We recommend layering 2 inches to 3 inches of mulch for your garden beds and planting area. The mulch should be evenly spread. Avoid bulking up on mulch around tree trunks or the stems of a plant. Too much mulch up against the plant may result in unwanted pests, a stunt of plant growth and/or disease.

Fostering Growth

Encouraging your garden's growth involves more than just planting and watering. Regular pruning, fertilization, and pest control are essential to maintaining a healthy and vibrant garden. Stay informed and proactive in your gardening practices to ensure your green space flourishes.
