Growing Impatiens

Impatiens are a spring staple and classic choice for a flower garden. Impatiens can be grown right after the last winter frost, so they are usually what we like to plant first each season in Scarlett’s Garden.

Here are some tips and considerations for growing impatiens this year:

When to Plant: Plant in the early spring, adding both fertilizer and compost.

Where to Plant Impatiens: Consider planting Impatiens along a shaded garden pathway, along a border, by a deck or patio that blocks the sun, or in pots by the porch.

Sun or Shade: Shady areas are best. Avoid a place that gets a lot of direct sun without trees nearby.

Soil: Well drained soil. However, keep the soil moist and don’t let Impatiens get too dry.

Spacing: For compact blooms, plant Impatiens 10 inches apart from one another.

Maintenance: Impatiens benefit from fertilizer, organic material, and dead heading spent blooms to encourage new growth.

Watering: Regular watering is required, especially on hot days. Avoid getting the soil too soggy though.

Potting: Impatiens can also grow in pots. Just make sure to pick a pot with good drainage. Then choose a shady area with your watering can close by!
