All About Azaleas

Azaleas can serve as a beautiful addition to your garden. While some azaleas lose their leaves in the winter, some bushes are evergreen and keep their leaves throughout the cold months. You can consider covering your azaleas if the temperature drops too low in the winter. However, healthy, established azaleas should have no problem withstanding the winter months in the northeast. To prepare your azaleas for winter, consider giving them a nice watering and mulch before the temperatures drop, to keep the roots and base healthy.

After the winter months, it’s time to start with azalea spring care! We tend to fertilize the azaleas in Scarlett’s Garden at the first sight of spring and then again about 3 months into the season. We have also found that pruning azaleas in the spring sparingly, and then slowly through mid-summer helps keep our azaleas healthy. This way, we are able to shape the azaleas while also promoting new growth. For encouraging blooms, we use holy tone, just like we do on our other hardy plants. These steps have shown for some of the most beautiful blooms in the spring that continue throughout the summer months!

We will continue to share our tips for azalea care as ours grow in Scarlett’s Garden.
